QUICK ANSWER
- Start in a furnished monthly rental, then sign a long lease once you know the city.
- Arrive on the right visa — a work permit can’t be arranged on a tourist e-Visa.
- Get a SIM with your passport at the airport, then sort bank, residence ID and utilities.
- Budget for advance rent, the agent fee and rising electricity prices.
Your first month in Addis Ababa goes much more smoothly with a plan. This checklist covers where to stay first, the paperwork, your phone and money, utilities, and finding a long-term home — based on what our clients ask us most.
Before you arrive: the right visa
If you are coming to work, enter on the visa your employer sponsors (business or investment), not a tourist e-Visa. Switching from a tourist visa to a work permit is not allowed. Your employer applies for the work permit through the Ministry of Labor and Skills; you will need your degrees and experience letters (legalised), a passport valid for six months, a medical clearance and passport photos.
Week 1: a furnished place to start
Hotels add up quickly. A furnished monthly rental gives you a kitchen, internet and space while you learn the city and visit neighborhoods at rush hour. See our short-term furnished homes.
Phone, internet and money
- SIM: Ethio Telecom and Safaricom both sell prepaid SIMs at the airport and official shops. Bring your passport — SIMs are registered to your ID.
- Mobile money: telebirr and M-Pesa are widely used for bills and transfers once your SIM is registered.
- Cash: card acceptance is improving but limited outside hotels and big shops; keep some birr. 1 USD ≈ 163 ETB (October 2026).
- Bank account: banks usually ask for your passport, residence ID and work permit or employer letter.
Weeks 2–3: residence ID and paperwork
Once your work permit is approved, apply for your residence ID with the Immigration and Citizenship Service. Keep copies of your passport, visa, permit and lease — you will need them for the bank, utilities and lease registration.
Utilities: electricity, water and internet
Electricity prices are rising every quarter under a four-year reform that started in 2024 — residential rates have more than doubled — so ask about average monthly bills when you view a home. Check that the building has a water tank and pump, and a generator. Fibre internet is available in most modern buildings; ask the landlord which provider is installed.
